St. Mary's Visitation (Kohlhagen)
The Catholic pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a listed church building in Kohlhagen , a district of the Kirchhundem community in the Olpe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
History and architecture
The previous church was first mentioned in a document in a deed of foundation of the Eternal Vicarie on the mountain of our dear women 1490.
The Gothic- style Baroque church, located on a mountain, was built between 1703 and 1707 as a three-bay hall with a retracted choir and 5/10 end. It was built around the previous building. The room is vaulted with groin vaults , the vaults rest on stucco wall pillars. Ten ogival windows structure the outer walls, they show verses from the Beatitudes of the Bible. The small tower stands in the west, it was crowned with an octagonal pyramid in 1809. An extensive interior renovation took place from 1999 to 2000, during which time a new sacristy was added to the east choir.
