The town church of St. Marien in Treuenbrietzen was founded before 1217. The existing building was probably built between the second decade and the third quarter of the 13th century as a cross-shaped pillar basilica in the bound system, obviously under the influence of the churches in Lehnin and Zinna . While the eastern parts of the church with transept , main choir and apse as well as the two side choirs, which were originally also closed with an apse, were built from carefully executed field stone ashlar masonry, the western parts are made of brick.

Exterior

In contrast to the originally flat-roofed choir, the parts to the west of the transept are arched from the outset with cross vaults. The west tower with a square floor plan was only begun in 1452 and at the beginning of the 16th century it was provided with a helmet over four gables.

The structure of the monumental main apse in the east was based on the model of the Lehnin monastery church with five arched windows each in two rows and a final arched frieze. The transept fronts received large arched windows and blind rosettes in the gables. The southern side choir was changed several times, the northern side choir removed around 1720. The nave was vaulted with ribbed vaults based on the model of the neighboring Nikolaikirche and together with the choir and the transept. It is decorated with arched and triangular friezes. A large arched portal was added to the west wall of the church, which can now be seen in the tower hall; the associated column shafts are missing.

Interior

Inside, the impression of the space is determined by the heavy shapes and depressed proportions that still seem Romanesque. Only the eastern crossing arch is round arched, all other crossing arches and those of the nave arcades are pointed arched. In the eastern parts, the vault ribs made up of rods and two bulges are supported by brackets, while in the nave there are rectangular belt templates and services to support the ribs at the corners of the floor plan squares . The intermediate pillars of the arcades are formed in the shape of a cross and the templates for the central nave are used as panels around the arcades. The arched upper clad windows are arranged in pairs. In the late Gothic period, a sacristy with three cross-vaulted bays with a gallery above was built into the north arm of the transept.

In 1959 a restoration was carried out, whereby the late Romanesque painting was partially reconstructed according to findings. In the eastern parts the ribs are color-banded, in the southern aisle they are geometrically patterned and in the northern aisle they are marbled. The eastern parts were whitewashed, the walls of the nave were painted with a network of joints.

Furnishing

The main piece of equipment is a slender, proportioned, wooden altarpiece from the years 1730/40, which is formed from a column structure with lateral flower pendants . In between, a carved crucifix is depicted in front of a painted landscape of Golga, accompanied by free figures of Moses and John the Baptist . In the essay the bronze snake is shown in rich carving between putti with the tools of passion ; above it is depicted God the Father with trinity glory and trumpet angels .

The wooden pulpit was created by Friedrich Ziegler in 1737 and has a polygonal basket with a curved parapet with a painting of the Annunciation; the sound cover is adorned with putti, while the pulpit and staircase have been renewed.

A baroque baptismal font with a depiction of the fall of man embossed in brass comes from the first quarter of the 16th century. Several inscription tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries complete the equipment.

organ

The baroque organ by Joachim Wagner was consecrated in 1741. It has a well-proportioned prospect with acanthus decorations ; The work has 30 stops on two manuals and a pedal and is well preserved. The work was restored in 1977 by Alexander Schuke . The disposition is:
