The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Martin in the parish of St. Bernhard in the Hildburghausen district ( Thuringia ) was built in 1844 in the neo-Gothic style.

Building history

The church in St. Bernhard goes back to an early foundation. She was initially looked after from Reurieth , later also from Dingsleben and Henfstädt . Reurieth is currently responsible again. Today's church was built from 1842 to 1844 and was consecrated on November 12th. The construction management of the neo-Gothic, simply designed church building was the Meiningen architect August Wilhelm Döbner .

The four-by-3.8-meter choir was created from the previous church. It has an ogival window with tracery on both sides . In the nave there are the same windows, three on each of the three sides. The entrance portals have a shoulder arch shape. Four buttresses support the corners of the nave . The west facade is additionally decorated by a four-pass round window and has a small church tower, which is designed as an eight-sided, solid gable turret with a pointed helmet as the upper end. Inside hang a small bronze bell from 1933 and three chilled iron bells that were cast in 1947.

The interior was renovated and redesigned from 1931 to 1933. In addition to a new painting, the pulpit was moved slightly out of the chancel, the crucifix was attached to the eastern choir wall and the font was placed more centrally.

Furnishing

Since a renovation in 1994, the interior of the church has been designed in the same color as it was when it was built. The nave is painted in brilliant white and strong blue with gold, while the choir is beige. The organ with ten registers on manual and pedal is the work of the Schmiedefeld master organ builder Michael Schmidt from 1844 and was restored in 1996/97. The equipment includes a medieval crucifix that was bought by the Thuringian Museum Eisenach . The baptismal font , which is also shown in the local coat of arms, is remarkable . Its baptismal font was found in 1893 during construction work for the school. The age is not known. The carved reliefs on the baptismal font do not show any Christian motifs, but rather ancient depictions of hearts and wheels. The rune researcher Herman Wirth classified the font in 1933 as a Germanic sacrificial stone with an age of at least 2000 years.
