history

The St. Mauritius Church was originally a monastery church built in the first half of the 14th century . After abandonment of the convent served as a parish church and now also for musical performances.

The choir comes from this time. The nave with the flat coffered ceiling was constantly changed by renovations and new constructions around 1605 by fire and in the 17th century by restoration until it got its present appearance in the course of the restoration 1978-1983.

Remains of Gothic wall paintings were found in the choir room . The entrance portal as well as the pulpit staircase and baptismal font are from the late Renaissance .

The church has an organ on the west gallery with 54 registers, which was inaugurated again in 2008.

Hereditary funeral

The arched openings on the nave side are provided with wrought iron grilles. Behind it is the crypt of the hereditary burial place of the Schenken von Tautenburg from 1470 to 1640.

The grave was opened on November 10, 1819 in the presence of Grand Duke Karl August . A golden chain of grace came to light in the coffin of the governor of Freyburg and Eckartsberga , Baron Burghard Schenk von Tautenburg († 1605). Elector Christian of Saxony , whose tutor Burghard Schenk had been, had adored her. This chain, like all other found treasures from the church, was kept (at least in 1836) in the Frauenprießnitzer church.

Trivia

Joachim Ringelnatz was baptized here in 1893 .
