St. Michael is a Catholic parish church in the Borchen district of Kirchborchen in the Paderborn district , North Rhine-Westphalia . Structurally, the church belongs to the Borchen pastoral association in the Paderborn deanery in the archbishopric of the same name .

history

Already between 1015 and 1031 Bishop Meinwerk had a wooden church built in Südborchen, which he placed under the Abdinghof monastery . Shortly afterwards, Abbot Wolfgang of the monastery was able to build the first stone church, which was consecrated to St. Gall by Bishop Rotho in 1043 .

Today's Romanesque church was built around 1200 . She took over the parish of St. Gallus, which gradually fell into disrepair. The new church was dedicated to Saint Michael. The area around the church was originally a peninsula of about 75 m by 150 m through the Dorfbach and Ellerbach and could only be reached via one of the rivers. Therefore it also functioned as a fortified church . Construction studies have shown that the defensive tower was built in front of the church. Only the stepped coronation of the tower and the roof are from 1840.

On July 4, 1304, Abdinghof abbot Heinrich II signed a contract with the landlords and dependent farmers of Kirchborchen, Alfen and Nordborchen, which gave the Kirchborcheners one half and Alfen and Nordborchen together the other half. The resulting rights and obligations were also divided.

In 1660 the abbot of Abdinghof signed a contract with the masters Haußen and Heidt about the renovation of the church. The church received four new windows and a white interior painting. In 1738 the peninsula on which the church stands was flooded and also flooded the church. As a result, the high altar fell over and the pews were destroyed. The damage could be repaired with financial help from the Abdinghof monastery. It was not until 1743 that new stalls could be purchased. In 1752 the construction of the sacristy began.

From 1906 to 1907 the church was enlarged so that the old main nave became the south aisle.

Furnishing

It is believed that the interior of the church was originally dark and without benches and with an altar. The nave, which is today's south aisle, was two-story.

A list of the church inventory from 1654 shows what things were in the church: a silver monstrance , a pewter cup, three poor chasubles, three altar candlesticks, a statue of the Mother of God and three tower bells.

In 1720/21 the figures of saints Joachim , Michael , Gallus, Apollonia and Anna were created.

After the renovation of the high altar, it was consecrated to Saint Michael by the Auxiliary Bishop Pantaleon on August 30, 1721. Inside there are relics of John the Baptist , the Apostles Andrew , James the Disciples and Bartholomew , St. Sebastian and Bishop Leonard.

In 1766 the church got an organ from Johann Patroclus Möller .

In 1979 the community received a four-part bronze bell from the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher :
