St. Nicolai on the market in Jessen

history

The church is of Romanesque origin and was Gothic renovated in the 14th and 15th centuries . On February 14, 1522 the first Protestant communion service was carried out. After it was destroyed by fire in 1646 and the tower collapsed in 1657, the church was rebuilt by 1662. The current tower of the church was built in 1823. In 1895 the church underwent major repairs. In the years 1979 to 1994 the church was renewed again, a baroque pulpit altar from the demolished St. Petri Church in Groß Quenstedt near Halberstadt and the corresponding parapets of the gallery were installed. The organ, the baroque pictures, the font and the pulpit were also restored during this period. From 2001 to 2002 the church tower, which was threatened with collapse at that time, was restored and a third bell was procured. A renovation of the outer building took place between 2005 and 2006. During these years, the painting with the Descent from the Cross in the church was also restored. According to tradition, this is said to have been donated by a Wittenberg professor in 1552.

description

building

The church consists of a large rectangular hall and lateral, cross-shaped additions. The portals on these extensions are framed with aediculously shaped and mannered attachments. In the eastern part of the building there is a sacristy with dome-shaped vaults. The cuboid plaster structure of the nave and west tower of the building date from the year the tower was rebuilt. The cross arms are opened in the interior through round arches to the interior. The ceiling of the interior is from the years 1883/84.

altar

The altar was carved from pine and linden in Groß Quenstedt around 1700 and is a typical Protestant pulpit altar from the Baroque era. To the left of the pulpit is Moses with the tablets of the law, to the right of it is John the Baptist with a cross in his hand. The figure in the middle of the pulpit basket represents the blessing Christ with a globe in his hand, to the right and left of him are the chosen disciples, Andrew with a cross and James the Younger with a club on the left, James the Elder with a shell on his hat and John on the right . In the upper third of the altar there are four large figures above the large Moses figure: Peter with a cross and key and James with a book. About John the Baptist: Martin Luther with Bible and gown and the disciple John with a book. The crowning of the altar is Christ with a victory flag between two angels. The altarpiece from 1662 is now divided. The altar leaves with depictions of the Last Supper and Gethsemane are located on the south wall and on the south pore of the church.

History of the altar in Jessen

At the end of the 1970s, due to the severe deterioration of the Groß Quenstedter Church, it was decided to take it down to the tower and store the inventory in Magdeburg . In 1979, extensive repairs and redesign of the Nicolai Church began in Jessen. In 1983 the parish council of the time passed the resolution "to set up the furnishings for the Quenstedt church after completion in the Jessen church ". In the same year, the former Institute for Monument Preservation in Halle approves the transfer of the altar from Groß Quenstedt to Jessen, "in order to secure and preserve valuable works of art and to make them accessible to the public again. "

Church organ

In 1986 the inventory stored in Magdeburg is transferred to Jessen and the new construction of the supporting parts of the pulpit altar started. In the course of the restoration, lost pieces, such as the figure of Christ crowning the altar, were carved and the altarpiece was repainted. The completion took place in 1994.

Others

The octagonal baptismal font of the church stands on a volute foot .

The organ with 22 registers on two manuals and pedal , which is still in existence today, was built in 1868 by the Conrad Geißler organ building company from Eilenburg.
