The St. Nikolai Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Kappeln in Schleswig-Holstein . The church is a listed building.

Location and history

The current church was built between 1789 and 1793 in the late baroque style. The patron saint of the church, Hans Adolf von Rumohr at Gut Roest , had it built by Johann Adam Richter in place of a too small, dilapidated church from the 12th century.

The church is located on a hill west of the Schlei and thus characterizes the cityscape of Kappeln. In the churchyard, which is surrounded by a row of linden trees, there is a war memorial for the war of 1870/71 and a memorial to two emperors .

construction

The church building is a hall building with three sides at each end. The roof is a hipped roof with a ridge turret, in the west towards the city is the tower. The tower has a domed dome and a slim lantern .

The interior, covered by a hollow vault made of wood, is also designed in the style of the North Elbe late Baroque . In the western rear part of the church there is a two-storey gallery .

Furnishing

Some of the furnishings in the church come from the previous building, such as the altarpiece made by Hans Gudewerdt from Eckernförde in 1641. This was rebuilt and colored from 1792 to 1793, before it was made of natural wood. According to Wolfgang Teuchert , today's central section of the Gudewerdt Altar consists of the two fields of the original side wings; the redesign was then carried out by the carpenters Lehmeyer and Wolff in 1792. Only the original central section of the Gudewerdt altar adorns the altar today; the total altar without the central part is attached to the north side of the church.

The baptism has the shape of a cup. The crucifix from the second half of the 13th century is made of wood. On the south side of the sanctuary is a cenotaph for Detlef von Rumohr, who fell on Rügen in 1678 . The glass chandeliers were made in Bohemia around 1780.

The dominant piece of equipment is the pulpit altar with the organ above.

organ

The old organ of the Nikolaikirche combined pipe material from different centuries behind the prospectus from 1793 by an unknown organ builder. The organ with 26 registers , which was in use until 2013, was installed in 1960 by the organ builder Detlef Kleuker , but repeatedly proved to be prone to failure, so that the parish and an organ building association had been planning a new building using the historical material since the 1990s. From 2011, the organ was expanded in steps by the organ building workshop Reinalt Johannes Klein in Lübeck , which restored four historical registers from the 18th century, and otherwise rebuilt. Eight fully or partially preserved registers from the 16th century, which could be assigned to Jacob Scherer and his son-in-law Dirk Hoyer on the basis of the lengths and signatures , were not reintegrated into the new building. The new organ was consecrated on June 7, 2014. The instrument has 40 registers, which are divided into two manuals and pedal .
