The St. Nicholas Church is a Gothic Roman Catholic church from the 14th century in Čečovice (German Zetschowitz ) in Okres Domažlice ( Taus district ). Since 1999 it has been designated as a national cultural monument . Church patron is St. Nicholas of Myra .

history

In the place of the church, not far from the medieval castle of the Lords of Velhartice , there was a burial place from the 12th century. Finds indicate that there was also a wooden previous building.

In the years 1340-1360, Charles IV ordered the Lords of Velhartice to build the Gothic church.

The church was in very poor condition, but was exemplary renovated between 1999 and 2000.

In 1999 the church was declared a National Cultural Monument as an exceptional example of Gothic architecture in the Czech Republic.

Building description

Layout

The single-nave church building is closed off in the east by a polygonal apse . The St. Nicholas Church in Čečovice is made of red bricks with decorative elements made of sandstone. Access to the church is through a south-facing portal with eyelashes . The church tower is built on the north side and serves as a sacristy on the ground floor . On the west side there is a gallery supported by a central column , which is accessible via a staircase attached to the north side.

Gothic stone carvings

The stone carvings are of outstanding quality . Based on the morphology, it is assumed that they were made by craftsmen who were also involved in the Regensburg Cathedral and the Gothic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Nabburg . The figural frieze of the bar under the roof, for example, as well as the niches for the statues and the consoles and the front of the gallery inside, were executed in stone .
