St. Pankratius (Stockum)
The Catholic parish church of St. Pankratius is a listed church building in Stockum , a district of Sundern in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The parish belongs to the pastoral association Sorpetal-Stockum in the Dean's Office Hochsauerland-West ( Archbishopric Paderborn ).
History and architecture
The parish was first mentioned in 976 and 985. The foundations of the previous church were dug from 1962 to 1964 and the floor plan was covered. The foundations of what was probably a basilica aisle were also excavated. The three-bay hall made of quarry stone masonry with a compressed apse with five-eighth closure was created in the middle of the 13th century through early Gothic conversions and extensions from a Romanesque basilica in a bound system, with low transverse arms and a rectangular choir . On the south side of the apse there is a baroque chapel extension, the sacristy is in the north.
The exterior with arched openings and transverse gables over the two western hall bays is unadorned. In the former transverse arms there are new Romanesque portals .
In the central nave and in the former transverse arms, groin vaults rest on wide cross pillars , the transverse arms are set off from the central nave by low dividing arches . In the east yoke, the apse, the side aisles and the tower, pointed arches and sharp-edged, busted vaults were drawn.
From 1962 to 1964, the remains of a Romanesque painting from around 1200 were uncovered and supplemented in the western central nave yokes and in the north transverse arm . They come from the so-called Soest School of Painting. At the same time, a baptistery was added as a detached circular building to the side of the tower. The important Romanesque font was placed here.
The high tower under a pointed helmet stands in the west, its top is steeply inclined to the west. According to a survey carried out by a geodesist in the 1980s, its top is 1.227 meters from the center of the tower. A baptistery was added to the south of the tower in 1963.
Furnishing
Baptismal font
The Romanesque baptismal font with a slightly conical cylinder shape is considered important. Around 1220 it was decorated with rich figures and a leaf frieze. Remnants of the original version have been preserved. The wall is divided by arcades into eight fields in which the Annunciation, the birth of Jesus, the three wise men, the homage to the three kings, the baptism of Jesus, his crucifixion are depicted. Furthermore the Majestas Domini and St. Pancras are shown.
Romanesque cross
The Romanesque crucifix was carved from linden wood in the second half of the 12th century. The crucified one measures 86 cm, the outstretched arms have a wingspan of 81 cm. The crucifix was overlapped in the 14th century. Presumably the wooden surface had become damaged or one wanted to give the body a contemporary expression in line with the changed sense of style. The crucifix was completely restored in 1963, the old substance was almost completely eaten away by anobias. The new cross was made in the workshop of the state conservator in Münster.
organ
Evidence for expenses for organists, bellows or repairs show the existence of an organ as early as the 16th century. The instrument was repaired in 1624 by the master Caspar from Arnsberg. A new organ was built in the second half of the 17th century. This organ was expanded in 1772 and sold to Oberhundem in 1811. From 1811 to 1812 the organ builder Gerhard Nöhl built a new organ, the case of which was dismantled in 1962 and sold to Eslohe. A new instrument was placed in front of the shield wall of the tower in 1967, the main work and pedal towers surround the passage.
Bells
St. Pankratius has a strikingly large bell. Of particular importance are three bells (No. 6, 8, 10) from the 12th century. They form the only triple chime of three Romanesque bells from one piece in Europe.
