St. Peter and Paul (Aldekerk)

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a listed church building in Aldekerk , a district of Kerken in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Kleve .

History and architecture

The church was first mentioned in 1218 as ecclesia antiqua , at that time it was granted baptism and burial rights. At the latest since 1274 it became independent with the appointment of its own pastor and the definition of the parish boundaries. It has belonged to the Münster diocese since 1821 . The current neo-Gothic brick hall was built in the 19th century. It goes back to a previous church from the 15th century, which was destroyed several times and rebuilt. The west tower is in front. The furnishings were created by well-known neo-Gothic artists . The large-format wall and vault paintings as well as the tendril paintings are by J. Rensing (1875) and in particular the stump student Gerhard Lamers (1909–1914) and adorn almost the entire interior. The choir was decorated particularly lavishly. The windows from 1905 and 1914 were designed by Friedrich Stummel and painted by W. Derrix. The walls and paintings were whitewashed in 1956. During renovation work from 1975 to 1977, the paintings were exposed again. During this time a new organ was installed. The neo-Gothic altars, the main, Marien and Anna altars were created based on the model of late medieval carved altars.

Furnishing

The main altar was made in 1905 by the Tenelsen brothers, H. Brey and H. Holtmann. When the altar is open, one sees Christ's sacrifice on the cross ; if it is closed, the panels show the threefold office of Christ, teaching office, pastoral office and priesthood. The Trinity , venerated by saints, is represented in the windows . The altar of Mary was made by F. Perey in 1881, the Virgin Mary stands out in it. The inner fields are decorated with reliefs from the life of Mary. The painting and windows in the Marienchor are thematically coordinated with Maria . The Anna altar was carved by Ferdinand Langenberg in 1888 and gilded by Peter Jansen in 1912. The focus is a representation of Anna the third of herself . Friedrich Stummel painted the wing paintings with scenes from the life of Joachim and Anna, Maria's parents. Above the altar is the genealogical tree of Jesus, the root of Jesse . 14 Stations of the Cross , painted in oil on copper, were made in the school of Fr. Stummel. The organ was first set up by Rütter from Kevelaer and renewed in 1977 by Speith-Orgelbau from Rietberg and expanded to include the organ prospect. The organ with around 3,000 pipes is three-manual. It is equipped with an electronic game and stop mechanism. The instrument was expanded to include a Spanish trumpet work in 2009 . Four iron bells have been hanging in the tower since 1949, the old bronze bells were melted down for war purposes in 1942.

Equipment from the previous church

Some pieces were taken over from the previous church: The font from 1218 was made of Namur bluestone , the corner pillars were lost. The pulpit dates from the 17th century. In the side aisles there are some rural wooden sculptures from the 18th century. The choir stalls date from the 17th century.
