The Evangelical Church of St. Petri is in the town of Sömmerda in the Sömmerda district in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish of St. Petri Sömmerda in the Eisleben-Sömmerda parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The church, built in 1407, is the third church building on the same property . It was created as the successor to the church that burned down in 1398. After the Thirty Years' War it was demolished because it was in disrepair, after the church tower had been torn down in 1617. The new tower was completed in 1718 and has a hood and lantern . The building is a hall with high arched windows and a staircase on the south side. Inside, a three-sided gallery surrounds the ship. A restoration took place in 1985. A rustic wooden ceiling with a painting by Johann Christian Reinhardt from 1698 completes the room. The Holy Trinity is shown with angels and the figure of Martin Luther.

Furnishing

A large two-zone altarpiece from 1695 is decorated with paintings of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ and smaller carved figures depicting Peter and Paul and a crucifixion and probably come from a reredos from the 15th century. In front of the north wall is a high-footed pulpit, which can be reached via a short walkway from the sacristy . A high screen with emblematic representations is attached over the parapet of the footbridge . The pulpit parapet is decorated with delicate columns and paintings with Christ Salvator, apostles and evangelists.

The most important late medieval piece of equipment is a three-part retable with the inscription dating 1464, which is attributed to the master of the Thomas Altar in St. Thomas Church (Erfurt) and belongs to the church in Schallenburg . It shows the Coronation of Mary in the center , flanked by three saints each in the central shrine and on the inside of the wings. The outside of the wing depicts a scene of the Annunciation . Several late Gothic carved figures ( Anna herself , crucifix and two saints) and a large, octagonal baptismal font come from the previous building .

The first organ was created by Johann Georg Krippendorf, after some improvements in renovations, it was last in 1957 Gerhard Kirchner from Weimar who thoroughly repaired it and improved its sound. It is playable and contains 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

Surroundings

On the south side of the church there are gravestones from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church is surrounded by a cemetery, which was used as a burial place until 1858 and is enclosed by an old wall with a gate. There are reliefs with initials and the dates 1567 and 1671.
