The Catholic parish church of St. Petronilla is a listed church building in Wettringen , a municipality in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The church and the goods were first mentioned in 838 and 853 as owned by Herford Abbey. As a parish , it was subordinated to the archdeaconate of the Langenhorst monastery for the first time in 1193 and 1203 by Bishop Hermann II of Münster . The first church, probably around 800, was probably an inconspicuous wooden building. The first stone building was erected in the 11th century. This was demolished after about 700 years from 1861 to 1862 and replaced by the current church. Emil von Manger was responsible for the planning and construction management . Today's church is a three - aisled neo - Gothic hall church with a wide central nave and two narrow aisles. The nave is divided by four buttresses . In the gable of the tower there is a statue of St. Petronilla. The heavy bronze portal doors show pictures from the Old and New Testament, they were created by Joseph Krautwald in 1979 and 1983 . Several stained glass windows structure the walls. An extensive renovation under the direction of the architect Hedwig Schröder was completed on Palm Sunday 2012. The sandstone-colored round pillars, the blue-gold ribbed vault and the wine-red belt arches have been refreshed in their original colors. In the course of this renovation, a baptistery was built near the baptismal font. The tabernacle comes from the secular chapel of the Josefhaus in Wettringen.
