The Church of St. Johannes Baptist in Langenhorst , a district of Ochtrup, is a Roman Catholic parish church and a branch church of the parish of St. Lambertus in Ochtrup. It is the former Augustinian monastery church .
history
The monastery church of the Augustinian Sisters in Langenhorst was founded by the cathedral dean Franko von Wettringen . It was built with interruptions between 1180 and 1225/30. In 1203 the bishop of Münster , Hermann II von Katzenelnbogen, granted extensive privileges to the Langenhorst monastery. Its importance is in the confirmation of the rights and ownership of the monastery by Pope Clement III. recognizable. On May 30, 1556, large parts of the monastery, almost all farm buildings as well as the north tower and the north-east side of the church burned down in a devastating fire disaster for Langenhorst. In 1576 the monastery was converted into a free worldly aristocratic women's monastery. The last heyday of the monastery was around 1750. In 1811 the monastery was abolished in the course of secularization .
architecture
The church, which was begun in the east in 1180, is probably the most important and diverse church in the Steinfurt district and one of the most remarkable hall churches in Munsterland so-called bound order (i.e. the vaults of all naves have the same apex height and the square yoke of the central nave is made up of two square yokes in the side aisles flanked). The building has a short, 32 m long, compact floor plan with an equally square choir space between two choir side towers. The overall layout of the three naves almost corresponds to that of a golden rectangle . The arm of the transept, which was destroyed by the collapse of the north tower, was widened to its original size in 1867, and the tower was not rebuilt until 1970.
Pen chamber
At the beginning of 1994, on the initiative of Pastor Msgr. Karl Stindt, the collegiate chamber was set up on the upper floor of the southern choir tower . Noteworthy testimonies of living faith are exhibited in the square tower room; they also reflect the religious culture and history of the former monastery.
In addition to the treasury, the collegiate chamber is also an extended sacristy , as the liturgical vessels and utensils are still in use during high celebrations.
During the most recent restoration in 2013, the exhibits in the collegiate chamber had to be brought to Münster for safekeeping until further notice due to the unfavorable climatic conditions there.
Others
The (former) parish of St. Johannes Baptist Langenhorst owns a historical nativity scene with figures in the Nazarene style for their church. The special thing is that the associated historical crib stable has also been preserved and is also used. It is a predominantly gray-framed, masonry-imitating wooden architecture with pillars and round arches. Part of the background is painted with landscape. A Felix Schröder, church painter from Recklinghausen can be identified as the manufacturer of the crib stable.
