Church from the southwest

As early as October 1, 1964, the Detmerode district, which was still under construction, became an independent pastoral care district, and Wim van der Zande began his ministry as the first priest . On the 1st of Advent of the same year, the first Holy Mass took place in a room of elementary school XIII. instead of. From March 20, 1967, the Holy Masses took place in a garage of a private house on Kurt-Schumacher-Ring that had been converted into a chapel, and the congregation was occasionally a guest in the nearby Evangelical St. Stephen's Church . This chapel already had a tabernacle .

Planning for the church center began in 1964, and a church building association was founded on May 20, 1965. Early plans to build the church next to the Stephanuskirche were not implemented. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 20, 1971. The foundation stone of the church was laid on March 19, 1972, and the topping-out ceremony on September 15 of the same year. On January 1, 1973, the community was raised to an independent parish. From March 5, 1973, a room in the newly built community center, which later served as a meeting place for the elderly, was used as a chapel. On June 3, 1973, the church was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen , relics of the holy martyrs Prudentius and Jucundina were included in the main altar . The annual celebration of the parish fair was set on the 6th Sunday after Easter. In 1982 the parish was raised to a parish, in the same year the Friends of St. Raphael Parish evolved from the church building association

In 1996 the pastoral care unit Wolfsburg-Süd was founded from the parishes of Mary's motherhood in Fallersleben , St. Raphael and St. Elisabeth in Westhagen. Since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt deanery; previously it belonged to the dean's office in Wolfsburg, which at that time was renamed and enlarged to include the Helmstedt part of the then-dissolved dean's office in Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel. In September 2009 the last local pastor retired and left Detmerode. Since September 1st, 2010 the church belongs to the parish of St. Christophorus . In 2012 the former parish apartment was integrated into the adjoining day-care center. Due to the profanation of the St. Elisabeth Church on November 19, 2016, the catchment area of the church, which originally only included Detmerode, expanded to include the neighboring district of Westhagen. Since then, St. Raphael has also been the youngest still existing church in the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt deanery.

Architecture and equipment

inside view

The church and the entire community center were designed by Toni Hermanns (1915–2007) from Kleve , who otherwise mostly built structures in North Rhine-Westphalia . All the buildings in the church center were built from sand-lime bricks and concrete. The church, designed as a central building, is around 97 meters above sea level and has 248 seats, with the freely arranged altar island in the center. The main altar, the free-standing cross with body, the ambo , the tabernacle, the statue of the Virgin Mary and the door handles were designed by Hanns Joachim Klug . The tabernacle made of bronze is located in the niche of a rock-like wall projection on the south side of the church. The Way of the Cross is a work by Professor Kalmbach from Gifhorn . A confessional is set into the outer wall. In the south-west of the church there is a chapel open to the church, in which there is a statue of St. Anthony of Padua in addition to a statue of Mary . Planned stained glass windows were not implemented for reasons of cost, instead lead glazing made from industrial glass was used.
