St. Rita

history

Even before the community was founded in 1929, some Augustinians were in charge of pastoral care in today's parish area. In 1929, today's parish area was separated from St. Marien in Berlin-Reinickendorf; St. Rita thus became a curate . The three Augustinian Fathers, who were initially housed in a rented apartment in Oranienburger Strasse, were officially assigned pastoral care in the extensive parish area (Reinickendorf-West, Wittenau , Lübars ). In 1935 the monastery was built. A parish church did not yet exist, which is why the chapel of the St. Hedwig cemetery, the chapel of the children's home of the Sisters of Mary in Wittenau and a small chapel in Lübars had to be made do with for several decades. A separate church could only be started on August 14, 1951. It was consecrated on June 22, 1952. Wittenau was no longer part of the parish area: the parishes of St. Nikolaus and St. Martin had been founded in the area.

Building description

Following the Augustinian monastery building, which was built in 1935, Felix Hinssen designed the first completely redesigned Catholic church building after the Second World War . The two-storey structure has the layout of the Latin cross . The single-nave hall church has a transept . The brickwork is plastered sand-colored over a red brick base . The church hall is on the upper floor , to which an outside staircase leads up on the long side and on the street side. The ground floor houses the community hall and the weekday chapel. The walls are structured by narrow arched windows. The nave and the choir are covered with satte roofs. Over the eastern arm of the transept is the bell tower , which also has a gable roof , the ridge of which is parallel to that of the nave. The western arm of the transept is under the towing roof of the tower. In the belfry hangs a ring made of three bronze bells:
