Detail view

The Protestant parish church of St. Severin is a listed church building in Schwefe , a district of Welver in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

Until 1809 the building was also the church of the evangelical women's monastery, which was split off from the Dominican monastery in Paradiese in 1660 . The hall church with a polygonal closed choir and a chapel-like extension on the south side has a west tower . The core building and the tower were built around 1150. The originally Romanesque church was the center of a defense system (the fish ponds in the parish garden are still remnants of the church castle moats). The so-called Urbanus chapel was added in the 15th century. The nave was widened in 1706, according to the names in wall anchors, and the north wall and the choir were rebuilt at the same time. At the same time, the windows on the south side were enlarged. The spire was renewed in its present form in 1788.

The exterior was built from hammer-right quarry stone, and the tower was slurried. The south wall of the nave is in line with the tower. The walls are structured by stepped buttresses and high arched windows, as well as two bricked-up Romanesque windows. The arched portals are kept simple.

A barrel ceiling made of Wellerwerk was drawn into the interior . In the Urbanus Chapel there is a deeply set ribbed vault . The former collegiate and west gallery stand on twisted columns. The St. Urbanus and Mary painted on the vault are indicated in chronograms with 1662, 1663 and 1664. In 2016 the interior was thoroughly renovated.
