St. Stephan (Wiffertshausen)
The catholic branch church St. Stephan is a monument in Wiffertshausen near Friedberg in Bavaria.
history
The foundation walls of the church consecrated to St. Stephen go back to before 900. It is believed that there was a place of worship there in pre-Christian times . During a renovation in 1980/81, the foundation walls of a second building around 1000 AD were proven, which was a hall building with a retracted, semicircular apse . The church was built from brick composite using infill wall technology. Remains of Roman roof tiles were found in the infill walls. In the center of the floor of the rear third of the nave, the substructure of a pillar was found, which presumably supported a gallery in which pilgrims could have slept, which can be interpreted as evidence of an early pilgrimage to St. Afra in the field or to her grave in Augsburg . The choir of the current building is Gothic , probably from the 15th century. In the 18th century the nave was renewed and the church was baroque . In 1868 it was extended to the west and a roof turret was added.
Building description
The church is a flat-roofed hall building with a retracted choir, supported on the outside by buttresses , under a barrel cap with a western roof turret.
Furnishing
The painter of the ceiling frescoes around 1740/50 is unknown; the choir fresco depicts the glorification of St. Stephen . The late Gothic figure of St. Stephen in the high altar from the end of the 15th century is significant . There are also figures of the Archangel Michael and Saint Franz Xaver by Johann Caspar Öberl around 1740.
