St. Stephanus (Schmelz)
The St. Stephanus Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Saarland district of Schmelz , Saarlouis . It bears the patronage of St. Stephen .
history
For today's church building, a church built in 1755 with a church tower from the Romanesque period, which had survived several previous buildings, was demolished in 1959 . The reason for the demolition was the lack of space in the old church due to population growth , which had previously undergone restoration in the years 1945 to 1947 to remove damage caused by the Second World War and a painting.
The church was built between 1959 and 1961, and the architect Toni Laub ( Saarwellingen ) was responsible for its design .
Church building
The church building designed by Toni Laub offers space for 1150 people. There is a large hall , with a long 39-meter ship , the trapezoidal widens from the entrance and then to the chancel narrows down again. The brown, wooden ceiling becomes higher and higher towards the altar, while at the same time the floor lowers towards the front. This creates an opening to the altar. In the interior there are no visible load-bearing elements such as columns or pillars , so that a clear view of the altar is guaranteed from every place in the church.
In the church tower, which is separate from the actual church building, there are three bells and a small war memorial chapel.
Furnishing
The furnishings of the church include the crucifix behind the altar, which, like the figure of St. Stephen on the right side altar, comes from the earlier church. The depiction of the Holy Family on the left is a carving from the 1960s. The altar was made of lime marble.
At eye level, small, square windows line the side walls, which not only serve as a light source, but also represent the stations of the cross . These windows were designed by the glass artist Jakob Schwarzkopf ( Trier ), which were then made by the Binsfeld (Trier) company in 1961. The half-sunken baptistery between the entrance doors and the two tall windows in the chancel are also by Schwarzkopf.
The mural on the outer wall of the entrance facade, which depicts the stoning of the church patron Stephanus, is the work of the painter Nikolaus Josef Schmitt ( Nennig ) and was created in 1962.
