The St. Ursula schools in Hildastraße in Freiburg 's Wiehre district offer a secondary school for girls (with after- school care ) as well as a vocational high school with the two subjects " Nutritional High School " and " Social and Health Science High School (social profile)", also exclusively for girls.

history

After several unsuccessful attempts, Ursulines from Lucerne received permission from the city of Freiburg in 1696 to settle in the city, where they founded a second girls' school in the city on Schiffstrasse. In 1709 the Freiburg branch of the order becomes independent. After three years of construction, a monastery with a church and school building can be moved into in 1710, the buildings of which are still preserved today and are known as the "Black Monastery" (because of the black habit of the nuns). The church of St. Ursula is used today as a church for the Old Catholic community , the monastery building is largely used by the Freiburg Adult Education Center.

In 1818, compulsory school fees were introduced in the Grand Duchy of Baden , which also obliges the Ursulines to give the previously free lessons only for a school fee . In 1830, the sisters added a sewing and work school for children “from simple classes” to their school offer. In 1850 the St. Ursula Teaching Institute is the largest of its kind in Baden. In 1865 the religious school supervision was transferred to the state administration. In 1876, denominational schools were banned and simultaneous schools became compulsory in Baden. Since the Ursulines refuse to convert, the school is closed and the monastery is closed in the following year. At that time the school had about 1000 students. The last superior then opened a private secondary school for girls with a boarding school for initially 120 students.

In 1893, after several changes of location, thanks to the support of a donor, buildings for the school and monastery can be moved into on Eisenbahnstrasse, which is still the location of the Ursula-Gymnasium in Freiburg today . As the premises at this location were soon no longer sufficient, the order acquired the property of the Risler family of manufacturers in the Wiehre district on Hildastraße in 1926. The monastery and boarding school will be relocated there, and a women's school will also be founded there, the forerunner of today's St. Ursula schools. In 1929 a seminar for training home economics teachers is opened. During the Nazi era , the primary school had to be given up, later the continuation of the domestic school was also prohibited; However, this will be continued on a small scale. The seminar for home economics teachers had to close in 1941, but an already decided confiscation or expropriation of the property in Hildastrasse can be prevented.

In 1946, school and boarding school operations can be resumed on Hildastrasse. In 1954 the “Private Women's School St. Ursula in Hildastraße” received state approval. In 1958 a new school building was opened. In 1969 the women's vocational high school, today a nutritional high school, is established, and in 1972 the first female high school graduates finish their schooling there. In 1968 a vocational school for elderly care is opened. The training as a housekeeper is discontinued due to low demand. For this reason, the boarding school is also closed in 1969.

In 1990 the order passed the sponsorship of the St. Ursula vocational schools to the school foundation of the Archdiocese of Freiburg . The social pedagogical grammar school was opened in 1991, but its Abitur initially only entitles students to study at all universities in Baden-Württemberg. In 1996 the Ursulines celebrated their three-hundred-year school commitment in Freiburg. In 1997 the girls' secondary school begins its school operations. The new official name of the school center is now “St. Ursula Schools Hildastraße ”. In this year it was also achieved that the Abitur of the social pedagogical high school now entitles to unrestricted university attendance throughout Germany. Until 2010, the school will also offer a vocational school for care for the elderly and care assistance for the elderly . This year it will be sponsored by the Caritas Association and continues today under the name Maria-Belstler-Schule. The “Social Pedagogical Gymnasium” (SG), previously with experimental school status, will be recognized as a “Social Science Gymnasium” and as an official school type. The official name is now “Social and Health Science Gymnasium” and is divided into two profiles, the “Social” profile, which is offered at the St. Ursula schools, and the “Health” profile, which is not offered here.

School partnerships

The St. Ursula Schools in Freiburg maintain a number of school partnerships. 1986 began a school partnership with the "Albemarle High School" in Charlottesville , Virginia , USA. Another school partnership followed in 1995 with the Catholic school in Paris "Lycée Polyvalent Privé Albert de Mun" and in 1996 with the Catholic school in Libiąż , Poland.
