Education courses in the German education system

The vocational grammar school or sometimes also collectively vocational grammar school (short: BG or BGY; formerly: Fachgymnasium ) is a type of school in the vocational school sector in Germany (or in some federal states) .

The vocational high school is a three- or six-year full-time school course in upper secondary level (grades 11-13) or secondary level I and II (grades 8-13), which, in addition to the general subjects of the upper level, also includes a job-related profile subject such as Example economics ( business high school ) and technology ( technical high school ). The extended secondary school qualification (or technical college entrance qualification plus qualification for the upper secondary school) is required for the visit , whereby certain admission requirements are included. In Baden-Württemberg, for example, a transfer to the 8th grade of the grammar school or the secondary school is required for the six-year form. A grade point average of 3.0 (mathematics, German, English) is required for secondary school students. The aim is the acquisition of the general university entrance ( Abitur ), which gives access to all courses at the universities , polytechnics and colleges , but also the way to vocational training allows.

After the 12th grade, graduates are awarded the technical college entrance qualification under certain conditions . In Brandenburg , Hesse , Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony , a maximum of the school part of the technical college entrance qualification is recognized. A practical part (e.g. vocational training or a one-year internship) is required for the advanced technical college entrance qualification itself. The responsible school inspectorate regulates the details.

history

In Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate , where vocational high schools can look back on a long history, this term has always been used. In December 2016, the day of the vocational high school - 50 years of the vocational high school in Baden-Württemberg was celebrated. There are now both state and private vocational high schools in Baden-Württemberg.

In Saarland , there were up to the 1990s, only three sites for vocational high schools: Economics in Saarbruecken and technology in Dillingen and Völklingen. At the turn of the millennium, the type of school, now called upper-level high schools, was expanded; In this context, the health and social profile was introduced and, from the 2018/2019 school year, the general education profile. There is now at least one location in each district or in the Saarbrücken city association.

Starting in 2002, vocational high schools were gradually built up in the state of Bremen. Since 2006 there have been 6 vocational high schools.

Since the 2006/2007 school year, the technical high school has been in operation in some federal states, e.g. B. in Brandenburg, officially called "vocational high school".

In Schleswig-Holstein, “Berufliches Gymnasium” has been the name for the former technical high schools since the end of 2007. The change resulted from an amendment to the Education Act and the associated introduction of the state ordinance on vocational high schools (BGVO) of October 2, 2007.

Since the school year 2010/2011, Lower Saxony has renamed the technical high school to the vocational high school.

Demarcation

There are institutions in Germany that also offer the Abitur course without this being recognizable in the name of the school, such as the college in North Rhine-Westphalia (around 1970–1990 alongside the existing vocational school) and the current vocational college in North Rhine-Westphalia .
