Blessing of the newly renovated chapel on June 21, 2009

According to current knowledge, the St. Ursula chapel was built in 1520. It stands on a hill south of Hohenfurch in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau .

The chapel is dedicated to St. Ursula , the patron saint of raftsmen . The Hohenfurch rafters thanked in prayer for the safe return from the timber transports that led over the Lech and Danube to the Black Sea .

Building history

At the time of construction, the chapel only consisted of today's main room. Two bell outlets on the east side (now only visible in the attic) show that the choir was added later. In the baroque era , a gallery was built in and the frame changed, and Gothic elements were removed and baroque stucco added in the choir room . The sign was also not always present. In the 1970s, the dilapidated roof was replaced as part of a job creation scheme. The old monk and nun bricks were replaced by monk and nun panels. Due to the more inflexible way of laying the panels, the shoulder on the choir side could no longer be formed. In the renovation in 2007, individual bricks from monk and nun were used again and the heel was restored. During this exterior renovation, the color scheme was also adapted according to old findings.

Figures and altar

The figures of St. Ursula, St. Mary Magdalene with the ointment pot and St. Vitus used to stand on the altar of the chapel . The altar also contained the breast figures of St. Elizabeth, St. Agnes and St. Barbara. With the exception of Saint Magdalena, all figures were stolen in the 1970s. The two altar wings were also torn down and stolen. The predella has since been housed in a museum. After the renovation of the chapel (2006–2009), the predella was brought back into the chapel, but the historically valuable carving of the Ursula ship remained in the museum and was reproduced as a photo in the chapel. In 2011 the figures of the altar were newly carved and the altar wings were restored according to old templates and now shine in new splendor. The blessing of the new interior took place on October 23, 2011.

Support association

In 1998, a support association named “ Friends of the St. Ursula Chapel Hohenfurch e. V. “founded. Since it was founded, the association has collected more than 107,000 euros (as of 10.2011) with the help of donations and the Christmas market that takes place every three years. In 2010, the general meeting decided that the friends' association should continue to exist despite the completion of the construction work in order to keep the chapel in good condition and, above all, to enliven it with church services and musical events.
