history

Reutern was first mentioned between 1094 and 1097, and a parish had existed there since at least the 12th century. The parish was initially incorporated into the Passau cathedral chapter , which as a legal person was the actual pastor. Pastoral care in the parish was provided by a pastor appointed and paid by the cathedral chapter. Around 1170 a pleban was mentioned as a pastor in Reutern.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Reutern became an independent parish and subordinated directly to the Bishop of Passau. Today it has around 580 Catholics.

Construction and equipment

The tower of St. Valentine's Church in the Romanesque- early Gothic transition style with a gable roof was built around 1250 and is considered the oldest completely preserved building in the Bad Griesbach area. The choir in the east of the building was built as a typical work of late Gothic church architecture from the Passau School of Architecture around 1450/60. The hallmarks of this are the "six diamond stars" in the vault structure and the rich structure of the upper part of the choir arches as well as the round bar framing of the inner wall pillars. The nave was probably built after 1500. It is unusual that the pointed arches of the vault do not continue in a round shape from the straight line, but rather abruptly at an angle.

The high altar and pulpit are from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century and are designed in the style of the baroque and rococo . The altarpiece shows the church patron Valentin von Raetien , the bishop of Passau who died in 475, healing epileptics. Saint Valentine is also represented in a wooden sculpture created around 1490 that is placed in the church. A sacristy was added in 1900. In 2002/2003 there was a thorough exterior renovation of the church, which has 200 seats.
