History and architecture

The church goes back to a Romanesque defense tower , which was probably built around 1075 and today serves as a winter church. In 1286 a Gothic pointed arch was built into the tower , in which the altar stands today. A thorough overhaul took place in 1738.

After the church had to be closed in 1827 due to dilapidation, a new nave in the classicist style was built in 1833/34 under the guidance of Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray . In 1834, Johann Friedrich Schulze from Paulinzella added an organ , and in 1895 the interior was renovated and repainted. The bronze bells, which were melted down during the war in 1917, were replaced in 1920 by cast steel bells from the company Schilling und Lattermann from Apolda. At the moment the bells have to be silent because cracks in the tower force them to do so and the bell cage also has defects.

In 1991/92 the roof of the tower was re-covered, a new church clock was installed and the tower was straightened. In 1996 the nave was re-roofed. Further extensive renovation measures followed by 2016.
