history
Hopfgarten was first mentioned in a document in 842 as "Hophgarto" in the registers of the imperial abbey of Fulda . In 1226 the place appears as a Hoefgarten. Today it is assumed that the name is derived from Hoppegartyn (= mare enclosure).
A castle site is located in the lowlands of the Gramme and is considered the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hopffgarten , named from 1247 , the castle is said to have been destroyed as early as 1303. Originally, the village was under the rule of the County of Vieselbach , but in 1286 it passed to the city of Erfurt conditionally and finally after the Thuringian Count War in 1343 . They built a solid round tower there as a watch tower . The parish can be traced for the first time in 1329. The first Protestant pastor came to Hopfgarten in 1579. The classical Hopfgarten village church was built in 1834.
From 1815 the place was part of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach ( Amt Vieselbach ) and after 1945 with the state of Thuringia it became part of the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR . Since 1990 the place belongs to the newly founded state of Thuringia.
On December 31, 2019, the community of Hopfgarten merged with other communities to form the rural community of Grammetal. The administrative community Grammetal , to which all municipalities belonged, was dissolved at the same time.
