Ulla is a district of the rural community Grammetal in the Weimarer Land district in central Thuringia with almost 600 inhabitants.

Geography and traffic

Ulla is located on the edge of the Thuringian Basin south of the Ettersberg and north of the Tannrodaer Waldland on a plateau between the valley of the Gramme in the west and the valley of the Ilm in the east. The corridor itself is not forested and is used intensively for agriculture. Due to its location on the federal autobahn 4 and the federal highway 7 , about 15 kilometers east of Erfurt and five kilometers west of Weimar , Ulla is in demand as a residential and commercial location and the corridor is characterized by a certain urban sprawl . The small town center itself is located along an old connecting route from Erfurt to Weimar and was initially extended northwards in the 20th century, where some settlement roads were created. In addition, new houses were built on the Niederanger in the east. After reunification, a large housing estate was built on Brachberg east of the old village as a result of strong suburbanization effects in the Erfurt-Weimar area.

The Ilm Valley Railway runs south of the village towards Weimar and Kranichfeld , which has a stop here. However, this is not named after Ulla, but after the village of Nohra, a little further away . At the station there is another settlement from GDR times that belongs to Ulla. South of the train station is the Ulla-Nohra-Obergrunstedt (UNO) industrial area, one of the largest industrial areas in Thuringia, which takes up the majority of the area between Ulla and the southern neighboring villages of Nohra, Obergrunstedt and Niedergrunstedt and is home to numerous companies, especially from the logistics sector. Other neighboring towns are Hopfgarten in the northwest and Tröbsdorf in the northeast.

Culture and history

The Protestant village church of St. Georg was first mentioned in 1257. It originally had a Romanesque arched entrance on its north side. In 1472 it was given a Gothic choir. Shortly after 1700 the tower was raised. The place itself was mentioned for the first time in 1249. Initially, Ulla was part of the County of Vieselbach , which was bought by the city of Erfurt in the Thuringian Count War in 1343 . In addition to the ministerial family of those von Ulla, the counts of Weimar-Orlamünde , the Erfurt Peterskloster and the Georgenthal and Oberweimar monasteries were wealthy in the village . After the Reformation , the monastery property was transferred to the newly founded University of Jena , while the sovereignty of Ulla near Erfurt and thus after 1664 remained with Kurmainz . In 1815 Ulla became part of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach .

Personalities

On January 12, 1780, the Lutheran theology professor Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette was born in Ulla as the son of the pastor. A monument erected in 1881 commemorates him today. After a National Socialist memorial was erected on the school square in 1938 , the de Wette memorial had to be moved to the churchyard. Only after the peaceful revolution could the memorial be erected in its old location.
