history

The district of Obergrunstedt has a first mention from 1289, whereas Wolfgang Kahl determined April 30, 1319 for the first documentary mention. The square village once belonged to the Counts of Orlamünde-Weimar. In the 16th century outweighed Waidanbau in agricultural production. The village has always been characterized by agriculture. The Nohra industrial park extends almost to the northern edge of the village and influences the place.

On Feb. 27, 1945 attacked US - low-flying planes a convoy of Allied prisoners of war on the highway in the amount of Obergrunstedt. They killed 117 men (Russians, French, Belgians and English). These were buried by the survivors below the cemetery wall. In 1965 a memorial was erected for them, which has been forgotten and is now to be renewed with the support of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge .
