Location of Niederzimmer in Thuringia

Niederzimmer is a district of the rural community Grammetal in the west of the Weimarer Land district .

geography

Niederzimmer lies at the foot of the southwestern roof of the Großer Ettersberg in the Thuringian Basin . The district road 45 connects the place with Vieselbach . The Weimar to Erfurt railway line runs through the district .

history

The earliest traces of settlement are dated to the Stone Age. A circular ditch system was found not far from Niederzimmer.

In the year 876 Niederzimmer was mentioned for the first time in the " tithe disputes" between the archbishops of Fulda and Mainz at the Reichstag in Ingelheim . It was later also called "rooms infra".

As a reward for loyal military service, the place was given to the Erfurters in 1346 by the Count of Orlamünde . Niederzimmer and its district formed the eastern border of the area of the city of Erfurt . The watch tower , 252 m above sea level. NN, was built during this time to secure the border and is one of the landmarks of the place. The entrance is on the first floor. After the Congress of Vienna , Niederzimmer fell to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach ( Amt Vieselbach ) and has had its current name since then - after it was previously called Zimmer-infra.

Until 1852 Niederzimmer had two churches , the Bonifatiuskirche in Oberdorf and the Wigbertikirche in Unterdorf. The former was demolished in 1854. Schools and a parish each belonged to the two churches . The older parts of the St. Wigberti church (Niederzimmer) date from the beginning of the 15th century and are a fortified church . The representations of the Old and New Testament (picture Bible) from the 17th century on the galleries and especially the emblemata above the chancel are worth seeing .

With its mourning hall - which was built in 1914, according to the director of the Museum for Sepulchral Culture in Kassel, Reiner Sörries - an extraordinary monument to German death culture of this era.

The churchyard still has many historical grave monuments.

Kurt Kluge (* 1886, † 1940) designed the memorial in honor of those who fell in the First World War. On Dorfstrasse there is a stone memorial commemorating the Franco-Prussian War 1870–71 and in front of it a simple wooden cross for the victims of the Second World War.

The place is rich in stately homesteads with beautiful courtyard gates.

On December 31, 2019 the community of Niederzimmer merged with other communities to form the rural community of Grammetal. The Grammetal administrative community , to which all municipalities previously belonged, was dissolved at the same time.

Others

At the beginning of March 2010, the former community aroused worldwide interest with its action Tar must be here . Due to the long winter and the severe frost, the Vieselbacher Straße in particular had numerous potholes. With 50 EURO you could "acquire" a pothole and every participant in the campaign received the approval for a plaque on which a desired text was attached. In April, the road was repaired with the proceeds from the 257 holes sold and 25 tons of asphalt from the German asphalt industry. The pothole memorial with the plaques was ceremonially unveiled on April 30th.
