St John's Church (High Legh)

St John's Church is an active parish church of the Church of England in High Legh in Cheshire , England . It belongs to the Dean's Office of Knutsford in the Diocese of Chester and is therefore in the ecclesiastical province of York . The vicariate is united with that of the parish church of St Paul in Over Tabley . The church was built by English Heritage on September 3, 1984 as a historic building at the Grade II listed .
history
A first church building on the site of today's St John's Church was a private chapel of the Leigh family, built in the early 16th century. In 1814 an Ionic front facade was added to a design by Thomas Harrison . This chapel burned down in 1891. The remaining stone walls served as the basis for a new church designed by Edmund Kirby in 1893 . The roof was re-covered in 1982. In 2008, a new stained glass window was installed depicting Christ and the fishermen. It was designed by Roy Coomber and manufactured by Pendle Stained Glass.
architecture
The church is built of ashlar and bricks , the roof is tiled. On the outside, the half-timbering with the plastered fillings is striking. The exterior, however, is completely made of bricks, the half-timbering is only used for decorative purposes. The plan of the church has a narthex at the west end, a nave with three yokes with a porch and a salient sacristy on the south side and the chancel on. A two-tier church tower rises above the narthex. The protruding west front of the narthex has a centrally arranged window with four sashes and a smaller window with two sashes on either side. Above the windows there is a gable made with timber framework . The lower storey of the tower has wide windows with four mullions and combat windows above and similar side windows. There is another gable above it. The upper floor of the tower consists of the brick-built bell cage with openings covered by blinds. Above it sits the roof with the lead spire . The south side of the church is closely pinned and contains four sash windows with tracery in Perpendicular style . The sacristy has a pent roof and a six-winged window. There is a window opening to the east in the chancel.
