The Festwiese stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in the Neckarpark event area of the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart , in the Bad Cannstatt district .
It is mainly used for training and events in athletics , but is also the home stadium of the American football club AFC Stuttgart Silver Arrows e. V. , who also trains nearby.
history
From the 1920s, the area was used as a parade or parade ground by the surrounding barracks. For the 15th German Gymnastics Festival in 1933, the festival meadow was built as a large outdoor facility with a wooden grandstand. Just one year later, the grandstand with press tower was built in exposed concrete . The grandstand was roofed in 1958. Large police festivals and football games with up to 10,000 spectators took place there.
As the conversion into a pure football stadium in the Mercedes-Benz Arena meant that athletics competitions could no longer be held, so the stadium was completely renovated from 2010 to the end of July 2011. In addition to a new grandstand with a total of 280 seats and a new functional building, the previous 400-meter circular track was adapted from 6 to 8 running tracks to the latest standard and the throwing and jumping facilities were optimized. The total costs for the stadium, which has up to 5,000 seats and standing space, came to around EUR 4.5 million.
The grandstand building was designed with a modular design so that it can be expanded step by step to accommodate up to 2,000 seats. The stadium's capacity could be expanded to a total of 10,000 spectators. As a first step, the changing building was expanded to include two changing rooms with sanitary areas, which were completed in spring 2014.
Sporting use
The stadium is the federal base and state performance center for athletics. It is used by schools and clubs for training, national youth games, etc., but also for smaller events. The Stuttgart district of the Württemberg Athletics Association organizes several sports festivals here every year and trains with its Stuttgart clubs and the talent promotion group. The stadium is also used for other sports such as B. American football, soccer games and other cultural events.
