Stadtheide in Paderborn

The Stadtheide is a former nature reserve in Paderborn , which has been a protected part of the landscape since 1999 .

General

The 2.5 hectare site was placed under nature protection in 1937 on the initiative of the Westphalian Heimatbund . It is 100 m above sea level on the southern edge of the Senne in the angle between Lippe and Pader . The Paderborn fish ponds are only a few hundred meters away as the crow flies. The Stadtheide represents the last larger heathland area in the area of the city of Paderborn. The sandy, nutrient-poor subsoil, that of black-brown soilis penetrated, has blown to low dune waves in places. The area is said to have been a bit wetter in the past. Shortly after it was placed under protection, it became apparent that the area as a heather protection area was much too small. The appearance of trees and shrubbery soon completely changed their character.

Flora and vegetation

The formerly open, especially from heather ( Calluna vulgaris ) existing heath is now strongly influenced by Scots pines ( Pinus sylvestris ), birches ( Betula pendula ) and oaks ( Quercus robur ) interspersed. The late blooming bird cherry ( Prunus serotina ) poses a major problem, as it has spread over the past few years and can only be removed with great effort. In the herb layer grow Moorgrass ( Molinia caeruela ), Agrostis capillaris ( Agrostis capillari s), sheep sorrel ( Rumex acetosella ) and heath bedstraw ( Galium saxatile L. ). The floristic peculiarities include or were (information, unless otherwise stated according to the flyer on Stadtheide published by Greenpeace Paderborn, as of January 2018):

In 1930 the swamp porst ( Rhododendron tomentosum ), which is not native to Westphalia, was planted in the area of the nature reserve . However, the species has long been extinct. The area, which is suffering from heavy visitor pressure, has been looked after and maintained by Greenpeace since 2015 .
