City lights press

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stadtlichter Presse is a book publisher founded in Berlin in 1996 , which has been based in Wenzendorf in the Harburg district since 2008 .

history

The publisher of Stadtlichter Presse is Ralf Zühlke (* 1963 in Magdeburg ), originally a railroad worker. He was interested in German-language editions of the Beat Generation's works , but found that there were hardly any translations by the lesser-known Beat authors, which ultimately led him to decide to found a publishing house for them himself. The publisher's name is reminiscent of the City Lights publishing house and bookstore owned by Lawrence Ferlinghetti in San Francisco , who was a sponsor of the Beat authors.

program

The focus of the publishing program is on the texts of the Beat authors. The first book published was "Riprap" by Gary Snyder , a hand press . Stadtlichter Presse has been publishing the Heartbeats series since 2001 , a collection of beat texts by well-known authors such as Jack Kerouac as well as works that are rather unknown in Germany. The books are usually bilingual and have an afterword. In 2010 the publisher started to print the Heartbeat Spezial series , which provides background texts on Beat authors and their work.

Stadtlichter Presse's commitment to the Beat Generation has been recognized many times. "Perhaps the city lights will one day shine brighter than the highly polished mainstream sparkles," wrote the Dresden literary magazine Signum . Rolling Stone magazine praised the fact that "real discoveries" could be made with this publisher. The writer Hadayatullah Hübsch wrote in the culture magazine My Way , publisher Ralf Zühlke is now also bringing out lost texts in first editions.

For several years now, Stadtlichter Presse has also published poetry and prose by contemporary German authors such as Wolfgang Berends , Thomas Collmer , Olaf Velte and Bert Strebe . In addition, little-known texts by the philosopher and poet Siegfried J. Schmidt or poems by the Finland-Swedes Lars Huldén and Claes Andersson have appeared. In 2009 , after the publisher moved to Wenzendorf in the Nordheide ( Harburg district ), the publisher Zühlke also started Edition Heiderand with new works by the local historian Eduard Kück .
