The city wall festival is celebrated every year on the third weekend in July in the small town of Freinsheim in the Upper Palatinate .

It is the largest of several wine festivals in the city and also its most important regular event. Behind the crowd pullers Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt and Deutsches Weinlesefest , it ranks among the most popular wine festivals in the Palatinate . The festival guests come not only from this region, but also from Rheinhessen and the Hessian - Baden Rhine - Neckar region . The “population” of the city tripled temporarily to 15,000 and more.

history

The street festival was created in 1977 to keep alive the more than 1200-year history of Freinsheim, which was first mentioned in the second half of the 8th century. The place is structurally shaped by the eponymous medieval city wall and the baroque old town , economically by viticulture and fruit growing . After the heavily fortified community, elevated to a town in 1471 , was almost completely destroyed by French troops in the autumn of 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession , the current old town was rebuilt from around 1700, while the town wall was not restored until the second half of the 20th century has been.

The festival is mainly a social and culinary event and established itself within a few years. Presumably because of the favorable weather conditions in midsummer, it developed from a local to a supraregional event, which initially radiated into the surrounding Unterhaardt region. Since around the beginning of the 1990s, the festival has been attracting more and more visitors from the wider area, some of whom have also become regular overnight guests .

Duration and location

The city wall festival lasts from Friday to Monday; During the four festive days, the parking lot situation is extremely tense and the narrow city center is closed to motorized traffic.

The celebration will take place in the historical backdrop of the baroque buildings in Freinsheim's old town, which is enclosed by a 1300 m long intact city wall with defense towers . Starting from the “iron gate”, 17 locations are set up along the inside of the city wall, which are called “stalls” but offer seats for a large number of guests. Here the local wineries , restaurants and clubs serve Palatine specialties and local wines.
