The Eilenburg City Museum is a full-time local museum in the Saxon city of Eilenburg . Organizationally, the Eilenburg city archive is also assigned to the city museum . Access to the Eilenburg mountain cellars is only possible as part of guided tours after registering with the city museum.

history

In 1900, the Eilenburg pastor and local researcher Wilhelm Büchting suggested the establishment of an antiquity museum, which should exhibit the existing evidence of the town's history for the general interest. Two rooms in the town hall were initially available for the collection . In the course of history, the museum changed its location several times, including for a long time it was housed in the former Wilhelmshöhe excursion restaurant . Since 2003 the facility has been in a central location in the historic “Zum Roten Hirsch” inn , a building of enormous importance to the city's history.

On an area of ​​around 500 square meters, the museum presents evidence of regional history from the 10th century to the more recent past.

Among other things, the only ceremonial sword obtained in Germany from the display are 13th / 14th century , Reformation prints from the Eilenburger printing workshop by Nikolaus Widemar rare Muentzer -Printing and a town clerk table from the 17th century , on the likely 1646 the Peace of Eilenburg between Sweden and Saxony was signed in the Thirty Years War . The exhibition also refers to the history of music in Eilenburg, in particular to the life and work of Martin Rinckart , the Eilenburg composer Franz Abt and the organ building tradition. The last known written documents of Johann Sebastian Bach can also be seen . A special feature is the figurative ceiling painting in the so-called Renaissance room, which was discovered during restoration work. This work of art is recognized by monument preservationists as having a unique position in Saxony.

The historical classroom from 1925 has been part of the permanent exhibition of the city museum since 1991. The exhibits all come from schools in Eilenburg, including three rows of two-seater wooden benches, a teacher's desk , a calculation board , a harmonium , a teaching material cabinet and numerous other contemporary utensils.

An extensive collection of toys, which the museum received in 2004 as a gift from the Swiss Ursula Andres-Frey (1931–2004), contains thousands of exhibits from the period from 1860 to 1960.

In addition, there are changing exhibitions several times a year on a wide variety of topics, for example: Air warriors in the Eilenburg-Torgau area (2004), acts of war in Eilenburg April '45 (2005), paintings by Volker Pohlenz (2006), photographs by Oswald Lübeck ( 2009), turning events in Eilenburg '89 (2009), 160 years of consumer cooperative in Eilenburg (2010), Kursächsische Postmeilensäulen (2012), traveling exhibition on the home system in the GDR (2012) and beat music in the GDR (2013).

Events

The museum offers more than 200 museum educational events annually. This includes school hours in the historic classroom, guided tours through the mountain cellars, thematic tours and lectures as well as tours in the ECW water tower, castle tours and city tours. The Eilenburg Museum Night takes place annually on International Museum Day. There are also readings, book presentations, conferences and file sharing.
