Martin Rinckart
Martin Rinckart (born April 23 or 24, 1586 in Eilenburg ; † December 8, 1649 there ) was a German poet , Protestant theologian and church musician of the Baroque period .
Life
Rinckart, son of master cooper Georg R. and his wife Salome, first attended school in Eilenburg from 1591 and then became a Thomas student in Leipzig in 1601 . From 1604 a member of the St. Thomas Choir , he studied simultaneously (from 1602) theology and philosophy at the Leipzig University. In 1610 Rinckart became cantor at the Church of St. Nikolai in Eisleben and teacher at the Latin school there, and in 1611 a deacon there at St. Anne's Church . At the end of 1613 he moved to the nearby Erdeborn as a pastor . There Rinckart married Christiane Morgenstern († 1637) from Eisleben. 1615 to the “ Poeta laureatus“Crowned, he earned his master's degree the following year. In 1617 he was appointed archdeacon to the church of St. Nikolai in his native Eilenburg; here he worked during the Thirty Years' War under great hardship (famine, plague) and in 1639 saved the city from plunder and pillage by the Swedes (supplication service) . In 1638 Rinckart's second marriage was the widow Barbara Scheffler, b. Werner († 1687) married.
Of his many writings and song poems, the world-famous and popular hymn, Now all thanks God, remained alive. The text first appeared in the appendix to his Jesu Herzbüchlein , which was published in Leipzig in 1636, while the melody first appeared in 1647 in Johann Crüger's hymn book Praxis pietatis melica . The song achieved lasting fame as the Leuthen Choral , after the surviving Prussian soldiers sang Rinckart's song on the evening of the Battle of Leuthen . In the 19th century, Catherine Winkworth wrote the English translation Now thank we all our God .
Of Rinckart's seven planned “Luther Dramas”, only three have appeared in print and have survived:
- Der Eißlebische Christian Ritter (1613) (uses the well-known ring parable for the first time in German literature )
- Indulgentiarius… Eisslebische Mansfeldische Jubel-Comoedia of… the shaming of Johann Tetzel (1618) ( digitized version )
- Monetarius ... The Müntzerian Bawren War (1625) ( digitized version )
Rinckart's grave is in his long-standing place of activity, the Eilenburg Nikolaikirche .
In memory of Rinckart, a street in Eilenburg (since 1861), the sacristy of the Nikolaikirche (since 1953) and the grammar school (since 1993) bear his name. In addition, streets in Leipzig and Berlin were named after Rinckart.
