The City Museum Erlangen is an exhibition house that deals with the city history of Erlangen as well as other, changing topics. Since 1964 it has been housed in the listed Old Town Hall , a stately baroque building from 1733/40.

history

The beginnings of the city museum go back to the Germanisches Museum Association founded in 1865. His aim was to collect “antiquities”, especially from the area of traditional handicrafts . Another important impetus was the establishment of the city archive in 1885. After an exhibition on the 100th anniversary of Erlangen's membership in Bavaria in 1810, the Erlanger Verkehrsverein began collecting work for a local history museum , which was opened in 1919 in the water tower (previously the university's detention center ) the palace garden was opened. In 1923 an exhibition room was added in the old town hall.

After several renovations and the amalgamation of all collections, the city museum was re-established and reopened under its current name in 1964. After the Erlangen city council established a museum advisory board in 1982, the museum complex, which since then also includes other buildings between Martin-Luther-Platz, Altstädter Kirchenplatz, Cedernstraße and Neuer Straße, was renovated and renovated according to the concept of a “city history center” between 1985 and 1993 the exhibition area expanded to around 1000 square meters. Between 1989 and 1993 the historic old town hall was renovated. Between 1994 and 2002 the city history collection was redesigned.
