In terms of architectural history, the church building consists of two parts: On the one hand, the bell tower , which was once part of the medieval city fortifications , and, on the other hand, the nave, which was completed in 1833 - as a replacement for a previous building that was demolished in 1824.

Furnishing

The church interior is built in the classical so-called " Weinbrenner style ". The ceilings were designed in 1939 and 1940 - with a large ceiling painting in the style and zeitgeist of the late 30s.

The high altar consists partly of a late Gothic shrine from the 15th century. This middle section was created near Weimar and only came to Meersburg in 2002. It shows the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus, surrounded by various saints. On the two outer wings indicated are the two patrons of the former diocese of Constance, St. (Bishop) Konrad and St. Pelagius depicted.

The two side altars were created in 1899 by the Mezger (Überlingen) art workshop.

  • The left side altar shows a scenic depiction of the church patronage " Mariä Heimsuchung ", the encounter of the pregnant Mary with Elisabeth; Also shown are Zacharias, Elisabeth's husband, and two angels next to the Mother of God, on whose wings the saints Aloisius of Gonganza and Agnes are painted.
  • The right side altar is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Sebastian , shown in the center of the reredos. Next to him are the saints Gallus and Boniface, Benedict, Francis, Otmar and Fridolin.

Despite the comparatively sparse furnishings, other works of art are important:

  • On the north wall is a painting by the painter Christoph Storer (1611–1671) from Constance. It shows "Flight into Egypt".
  • Above the doors of the side entrances there are two baroque busts created by DH Herberger in 1749. They show St. Peter and St. Paul.
  • Under the organ gallery there is a statue of the painful Mother of God with the dead son in her arms, created in 1920 by the Mezger art workshop in Überlingen.
  • The way of the cross in the rear area of the church comes from the painter Hans Breinlinger from Constance (d. 1963).
  • Next to the southern side entrance, a plaque commemorates the prince-bishops buried in the “old” Meersburg church. Next to it is an epitaph by the artist Domenikus Hermengild Herberger (Immenstaad). It commemorates Baron Balbach von Castell (died 1754).

The organ was technically rebuilt in 2014 by the organ builder Josef Maier (Hergensweiler). The pipe material comes mainly from the previous organ, which was built in 1972 by the organ builder Eugen Pfaff (Überlingen) with 29 registers on two manuals and a pedal in neo-baroque style. 24 registers were taken from this instrument and, as a Rückpositiv and main work, form the baroque core of the instrument. The disposition was expanded by 12 registers, which were mainly accommodated in a third manual as swell. This "Récit expressif" is intended to enable the performance of romantic organ literature. In the interest of a better bass foundation, a 16 'register has been added to the main work and pedal, and an additional 32' register to the pedal. The console, case, wind system and the entire action system were rebuilt; In addition, the organ was equipped with an electronic composer system. Today the instrument has 36 stops on three manual works and a pedal.
