The Roman Catholic parish church Murau is located in the municipality of Murau in the Murau district in Styria . The parish church , consecrated to St. Matthew , belongs to the dean's office in Murau in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

The church was donated in 1284 by Baron Otto I von Liechtenstein and continued by his son Otto II and consecrated in 1296 by the Bishop of Lavant . In 1333 the church was elevated to a parish church. In 1640 chapels were added in the two corners between the east bay of the side aisles and the transverse arms. In 1947/1948 there was a restoration. 1971/1972 was an exterior restoration.

architecture

The church building stands halfway up the southern slope of the castle and is surrounded by an old churchyard wall.

The important early Gothic pillar basilica with a crossing tower and cross arms was built uniformly from yellow tuff in a slow progression from west to east. The three-aisled, four-bay basilica nave has a high central nave with arcades with pointed arched windows. The central nave is open and connected to the side aisles with pointed arch arcades on squat octagonal pillars. The nave has groin vaults with the yokes separated by belt ribs on differently shaped consoles. The chapel extensions on the two east bays of the side aisles show themselves in rich stucco decorations and paintings.

The crossing, which is two steps higher, is accentuated by strong belt arches with an applied profiled rib as well as by crossing pillars with three-quarter circle services. The transept has a yoke on each side. The crossing and transept have cross ribbed vaults with round keystones, the crossing with the hand of blessing, in the north arm with the coat of arms of Liechtenstein, in the south arm with a flower rosette. The transept has a particularly tall and narrow lancet window to the north and south. A spiral staircase developed from an octagon is attached to the northern transverse arm and is dated 1469. There is a Gothic frieze band right there. The Liechtenstein crypt is located under the northern transverse arm.

Furnishing

Particularly noteworthy are the baroque pulpit, the high altar as well as frescoes from the 14th century and Protestant wall paintings from the Renaissance period , the wooden twelve-armed chandelier , the massive baptismal font, the rosary altar and the crucifixion group.

organ

The historical organ is particularly extensive and valuable. The instrument was built in 1698 by the organ builder Meyenburg and has largely been preserved. It has 17 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
