The building was originally a defense tower of the city fortifications, later the armory and, from 1578–1879, the town hall for the first time. During this time a renovation took place from 1740–1742. From 1879 to 1920 the building was privately owned, then it became the town hall again. Another renovation took place in 1925–1926, before the town hall was moved back to Raffaltplatz in 2001 .

The three-storey building with a tent roof and a lantern tower has a painted baroque sundial on the south facade, which was renewed in 1925. The sundial shows God the Father and the globe, next to it angels holding the panther coat of arms and the Murau city coat of arms. Six Roman stones are walled into the facade. On the first floor there is a painted door frame, dated 1642, depicting a mother with child and Justitia , on the second floor there is a wooden portal dated 1578, the door with architectural inlays. On the ground floor there is a stone lavabo with an inscription from the 16th century.

The wooden construction of the music pavilion was planned by Günther Domenig , it was originally built on piles at the mouth of the Rantenbach, partly above the Mur, but later had to be moved because of the current. Gottfried Bechtold's “Floor Sculpture” and Vaclav Fiala's “Circle for Murau” have already expired. Rudi Hirt's "Patience" shows cones waiting for their fate; Kurt Matt's "Blauer Portugieser" symbolizes tree and board in one.
