At the instigation of Mayor Wilhelm August Wiel, a municipal savings bank was founded in Wermelskirchen on March 17, 1877. The first board members worked on a voluntary basis. A part of the first surpluses was made available to the “Municipal Forest and Culture Fund”, but the larger part was invested in a reserve fund.

As a result of the general economic boom in the German Empire, the Sparkasse was able to book two million marks in savings in 1886. The money was invested in the regional economy. This made the Sparkasse the most important financial institution in the Lennep district .

The 25th anniversary was celebrated on March 17, 1902 in a small group of 15 people.

The Sparkasse's business expanded until the First World War, then suffered a setback in the course of hyperinflation in Germany. At that time, the Sparkasse employed 16 civil servants, employees and auxiliary staff. There were also 23 unemployed people who helped to deal with the daily flood of paper money. Until late at night, banknotes were checked, sorted, registered, bundled, and delivered to the Reichsbank. Finally, the board put an end to the paper chaos and sold the money by the tens as waste paper.

With the end of inflation in 1923, all deposits, capital and securities were almost worthless. The reserve fund that had accumulated over decades was destroyed. The total loss was 59 million marks. Due to the revaluation law of July 16, 1925, 18,000 accounts were converted to the new gold standard.

With the stock market crash of 1929 , the savings bank ran into difficulties again. After the first bank in Darmstadt had to close on July 13, 1931 , the Sparkasse initially decided to pay out only 300 marks per account and appealed to savers' reason - with a certain degree of success: at the end of 1931 it had a higher deposit level than the previous year. With the start of the war in 1939, the savings deposits of the new "Amtssparkasse Wermelskirchen" increased significantly.

In 1928, the two neighboring communities of Wermelskirchen, Dabringhausen and Dhünn, were combined to form the Dabringhausen office. The financial services were provided by the Amtssparkasse Dabringhausen. In 1938 it was merged with the Städtische Sparkasse Wermelskirchen and brought in over one million marks. The merger was officially sealed in 1939.

With the currency reform in 1948, the savings banks were again integrated into the international savings bank system.

Between 1950 and 1960 savings deposits rose from 4 to 34 million DM and doubled again by 1965. The branches in Tente (1963), in Berliner Straße (1971), in Pohlhausen (1977) and in the town hall (1982) were established.

From the mid-1970s, electronic data processing replaced the previously used Anker and Burroughs booking machines with data terminals and punch card readers . The first PC was installed in 1984 and the first network followed in 1992.

In 1991/92 the main office got an extension. In 2002 the 125th anniversary was celebrated. At that time, the company had around 160 employees at 7 locations.
