Stadtwerke Heidenheim supplied gas produced from coal in 1865. In 1885 they started building the drinking water supply and since 1905 the Stadtwerke Heidenheim have been generating and selling electricity. The joint stock company was founded in 1971. The shares are 100% owned by the city of Heidenheim. Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG has also been supplying electricity to customers outside of its own grid area since the 2003 financial year . In 2008, it began supplying natural gas to customers outside of its own gas supply network. Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG has operated its own networks for supplying electricity, gas, drinking water and heat to its customers as well as a fiber optic network from the start. The group is also active in the real estate industry. It creates and maintains living space primarily in Heidenheim and Frankenthal (Palatinate).
