Stamps is a city in Lafayette County in the US state of Arkansas . In 2010, around 1700 people lived in the city.

Stamps is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region that arose between the states of Arkansas, Louisiana , Oklahoma, and Texas .

history

For a long time, the city served as a stopover for the St. Louis & Southwestern Railway , whose route ran through the city in 1882. The first post office was opened in 1887. In the same year, the city was officially incorporated into the county and state. Like many cities in this region, Stamps owes its first economic boom to the timber industry. For some time the city had the largest sawmill in southern Arkansas at the time. One of the largest companies in this trade in the city was the Bodcaw Lumber Company , which operated in the city from 1889 to 1931. Starting out small, the company soon grew into one of the three big ones, adding two more sawmills in Stamps. It belonged to William Buchanan , the world's largest manufacturer of yellow spruce at the time. In addition, oil was being extracted from three fields in the town at the time.

With the growth of the wood processing companies, the city and its connections to other cities also grew. Finished timber was transported from Stamps to almost every state in the United States. Local industry reached its peak for the time being in the First World War , when a lot of wood was needed, especially for shipbuilding. This high demand led to the complete deforestation of the region's extensive tree population. When these were exhausted, the companies closed their plants and moved to other regions in the 1920s and 1930s.
