Stanisław Baliński (born August 2, 1898 in Warsaw , † November 12, 1984 in London ) was a Polish poet , prose writer and diplomat . He was the son of the poet and publicist Ignacy Baliński .

Life

Baliński graduated from high school in Warsaw and was preparing for a career as a pianist. In 1923 he completed his theoretical and compositional studies at the Warsaw Conservatory . He also studied law for two years and Polish studies for four years at the University of Warsaw , where he obtained his diploma in 1928 . As a poet he made his debut in 1918 with the poem Rozstanie , which appeared in the magazine Echa Warszawy i Przedmieść . He joined the Skamander group of poets in 1921 and published his poems and novels in their magazine from 1921 to 1928. In the Wiadomości Literacki he published from 1924 to 1935 with interruptions. He was also a member of the Polish PEN Club and composed for Warsaw cabarets . He began working for the Polish Foreign Ministry in 1922 and spent the years 1924 to 1925 in Brazil . He was then from 1925 to 1927 attaché at the Polish Embassy in Tehran . In Manchuria he was vice-consul from 1929 to 1933 . After his return to Poland in 1934 he worked as head of the Romanian department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He then worked from 1935 to 1937 in the Polish Embassy in Copenhagen .

After the outbreak of World War II , he left Poland and came to France via Romania , where he worked briefly for the Ministry of Information and Documentation of the Polish government- in- exile in Paris . With the government in exile, he moved to London in 1940, where he worked for the Foreign Ministry as chargé d'affaires in the government of Czechoslovakia until 1945 . He also published poems and stories in Polish exile magazines such as Wiadomości Polskie, Nowa Polska and Dziennik Polski i Dziennik Żołnierza . After the Second World War he stayed in London and continued his literary work. In the 1950s he worked with the radio stations Radio Free Europe and Voice of America .
