Stanislaw Brożek

Stanisław Brożek (born March 20, 1947 in Biskupice Radłowskie , Poland ) is a Polish forest scientist .

Life

education

From 1965 to 1970 Brożek studied at the Forestry Faculty of the Agricultural University in Cracow . In 1970 he obtained a master’s degree as a forester with a thesis on the project podziału powierzchniowego opartego na sieci dróg w kompleksie leśnym Jaworzyny Krynickiej w LZD (= Leśny Zakład Doświadczalny ). Both works were supervised by Bolesław W. Alexandrowicz. From 1979 Brożek worked as an assistant professor in the Soil Science team for silviculture . Together with Professor Wiesław Maciaszek, Brożek founded and organized the Forest Soil Research Department from 1981.

In a postgraduate course, Brożek acquired qualifications in the fields of nature conservation and university education . He completed scientific internships at institutes of the Mendel University in Brno and the Technical University of Zvolen .

From 1988 to 1989 Brożek was a Fulbright Scholar at the College of Forest Resources at Seattle University . During this time he worked on the research project Effects of soil changes caused by the red alder (Alnus rubra Bong) on ​​the biomass and the nutrient content of the seedlings of the common Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) . The results of this work were published in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research .

In 1994 Brożek completed his habilitation with a thesis on Przekształcanie górskich gleb porolnych przez olszę szarą (Alnus incana (L) Moench) (German: Conversion of post-agricultural mountain soils by the gray alder (Alnus incana (L) Moench) ) Brożek has been the head of the Forest Soil Research Department at the Faculty of Forest Science, Cracow University of Agriculture. Brożek was appointed full professor of forest science and soil science in 2004.

Brożek's work on forest soil research gained importance, including his atlas of Polish forest soils (together with Maciej Zwydak) and his classification of Polish forest soils (together with others). Brożek wrote more than 100 publications, including two textbooks.

Brożek gives lectures on soil science and forestry for foresters, landscape architects and farmers . He introduced the subjects of habitat studies and physical geography to foresters and landscape architects. In addition to numerous lectures and training courses on these topics in southern Poland, he organized didactic exhibitions on soil science. These were shown at Seattle University and Zvolen University of Technology.

At the beginning of the 21st century, Brożek researched and worked on various projects to evaluate lowland and high forest habitats and to map and diagnose forest habitats. He developed a concept for the first floor museum in Poland and a competition design for the presentation of European floors.

From 2008 to 2010 Brożek headed the project Development of soil quality indices for natural forest habitats in low and highlands in Poland and their application in silviculture . It was carried out in cooperation with the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Ås , Norway and funded from there.

From 2001 to 2010 was Brożek Secretary of the Department of Forestry (Forestry) in the Electronic Journal of Polish Universities of Agriculture ( Electronic Journal of Polish Agricultural Universities , EJPAU). Since 2010 he has been on the editorial committee of the Roczniki Gleboznawcze (Soil Science Annual). Brożek is a member of the Soil Science Society of Poland ( Polskie Towarzystwo Gleboznawcze ) and the Polish Society for Forests and Forests ( Polskie Towarzystwo Leśne ).

Awards

In 1980 Brożek received the silver badge and in 1984 the gold badge for services to the city of Krakow. In 1998 Brożek was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland . For his Atlas of Polish Forest Soils, he received the Team Prize of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland in 2004 and the Science Prize of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Kraków in 2005.
