Stanisław Obirek (born August 21, 1956 in Tomaszów Lubelski ) is a Polish theologian, historian, cultural anthropologist and former Jesuit .

After graduating from high school in 1975, he studied theater studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow , a year later he joined the Jesuit order under the influence of the Jesuit Stanisław Musiał .

He completed his novitiate in Stara Wieś ( Subcarpathian Voivodeship ). The ordination he was in Naples in 1983, the profession - vows he put 1991 on.

Obirek studied philosophy from 1978 to 1980 at the philosophical faculty of the Jesuit Ignatianum Academy in Krakow, then until 1983 at the Pontifical Theological Faculty in Naples and 1983 to 1985 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Back in Poland, he studied Polish language and literature at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow from 1985 to 1989. In 1994 he received his doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University in Cracow .

From 1994 to 1998 he was rector of the Jesuit College in Krakow. In 1999 he was a lecturer at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester (Massachusetts) , and in the same year professor at the University of Łódź . Since 1998 he has headed the chair for the history and philosophy of culture at the Jesuit philosophical-pedagogical academy Ignatianum in Krakow.

His critical statements about the conditions in the Roman Catholic Church in Poland, especially about the cult of Pope John Paul II , earned him violent attacks from the Polish bishops. In 2005 he was punished by the Provincial of the Jesuit Order with a year of confidentiality. Stanisław Obirek responded by leaving the Jesuit order and leaving the priesthood.

In 2006 he was reappointed professor at the University of Łodź. On September 19, 2011 he was appointed professor by the Polish President. Since 2013 he has been a visiting professor at the Center for American Research at the University of Warsaw .
