Stanislav Barabáš (born February 4, 1924 in Kalinka , Czechoslovakia ; † August 1, 1994 in Hamburg ) was a Slovak film director and screenwriter who worked in Czechoslovakia as well as in the Federal Republic of Germany (and there without diacritical marks in the preliminary and closing was called 'Stanislav Barabas').

Life

Barabas grew up as the son of a village teacher in Zvolenská Slatina , where he attended elementary school between 1931 and 1936. He was interested in art at an early age, but his father was against an artistic profession that he saw as clowning. From 1936 to 1943 he attended high school in Zvolen and then went to Bratislava . Between 1943 and 1946 he studied five semesters at the law faculty, but did not finish his studies, but went to Prague, where he began to study directing and was soon considered one of the most talented students. In 1950 he was admitted to the study of documentary films. Between 1951 and 1953 he was in military service, where he shot various documentaries.

After his military service, he was artistic director in the Prague documentary film studio for two years. In 1961 he made his first feature film. During the Prague Spring in 1968, he emigrated to Vienna and then spent two months in Canada , where he also briefly worked at the Canadian Film Institute. From 1969 he lived in Germany, first in Munich , then in Baden-Baden and Hamburg.

In Germany, Barabas shot early evening series such as Onkel Bräsig (1978) or Matt in 13 Zügen (1984), but also four contributions for the crime scene .

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , a return to Slovakia was planned, where he was supposed to make another film, but he passed away earlier.
