Stanley Eric Reinhart (born September 15, 1893 in Polk in Ashland County , † 1975 ) was an American general of the Second World War and after the war was the military governor of Upper Austria.

Life

Reinhart was born in Polk, Ohio , and worked as a teacher in North Red Haw, also Ohio, until 1911. He graduated from Westpoint Military Academy in 1916 and was assigned to the field artillery at Camp Fort Bliss, Texas.

Military career

On June 30, 1917, he was sent to the American Expeditionary Force as an adjutant under General Payton C. March in France. From February 12 to July 10, 1918, he commanded a field artillery division there and also successfully led his division into the battle in the Forest of Belleau . After that, he was given command of a battalion of artillery, which he during the fighting in Soissons , Ypres - Lys and in the Offensive Meuse-Argonne commanded.

After the Central Powers gave up on November 11, 1918, he returned to the United States on August 2, 1919, where he married nine months later. Between the First and Second World War he served as a field artillery instructor and as a teacher at various war and military schools in the United States.

Pearl Harbor

After the Japanese armed forces attacked Pearl Harbor , Reinhart was the artillery commander of the 25th Division that defended the coast of the island of Oahu . On December 6, 1942, he was embarked for Guadalcanal and took part in the local battle. And on April 22 of the following year, he was summoned home by the US Department of Defense.

65th Infantry Division

From July 1943 to mid-December 1944 he organized and trained the 65th Infantry Division at Camp Shelby , Missouri. He then crossed the Atlantic with her and joined George Patton's Third Army as her commander . Together with Patton's troops they crossed the Saar and fought their way through Germany, towards Austria.

Under his leadership, the 65th Division fought its way across the Fulda, Werra, Danube, Inn, Traun and Enns rivers. She conquered Neunkirchen, Oberursel, Bebra, Rottenburg an der Laaber, Langensalza , Neumarkt, Regensburg and Passau . Furthermore Schärding, Eferding, Linz and Enns. They also took over the German Danube Fleet and the Hungarian Navy , consisting of 25 armed ships and over 400 other vehicles.

At the end of the war he was appointed military governor of Upper Austria and set up his headquarters in Linz , where the 65th and later the 26th US infantry division also set up their quarters.

General Stanley Eric Reinhart was sent to hospital on October 15, 1945 and returned to the United States a month later, where he retired on September 30, 1946 due to physical discomfort.

Awards

In the course of his soldier career, Major General Reinhart was awarded ten Battle Stars, the Army Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaves, the Silver Star , the Legion of Merit , the Bronze Star , the French Legion d'Honneur , the Croix de Guerre and the Soviet Order of the Great Patriotic War Award. He also became an honorary member of the Russian Guard .

On October 16, 1945, General Stanley Eric Reinhart from the Province of Upper Austria was presented with a certificate for his special commitment during the difficult time of the Second World War and his support in restoring culture and economy.

The Passauer Neue Presse reported on September 26, 2009 that Anna Rosmus would like to set up a General Reinhart Museum in the birthplace of Adolf Hitler in Braunau am Inn with the support of the Austrian Memorial Service . This could also become part of the " House of Responsibility " concept proposed by Andreas Maislinger in 2000 .
