Stanley Kalms, Baron Kalms

Harold Stanley Kalms , Kt (* 21st November 1931 in London ) is the life president and former chairman ( Chairman ) of DSG International , formerly Dixons Group . DSG owns Dixons.com , Currys , The Link and PC World outlets. He spent his entire career from 1948 with Dixons, which was founded in 1937 by his father Charles Kalms .

life and career

Kalms attended Christ's College in Finchley . He joined Dixons in 1948 at the age of 16 and grew the company from a business to Europe's leading specialist electronics retailer.

Kalms in 1971 (until 2002) Chairman ( Chairman of the) Dixons Group plc appointed. He has been president there since 2002. He is also the governor of Dixons City Academy in Bradford , West Yorkshire , where the modern theater complex is named after him. He was Director of Business for Sterling and Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research . From 1987 to 1997 he was the Non-Executive Director of British Gas plc , later BG plc. Kalms was chairman of King's Healthcare National Health Service Trust from 1993 to 1996 . From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the Funding Agency for Schools , where he was Chairman of the Financial Committee during the same period . From 1991 to 2001 he was the Non-Executive Director of the Center for Policy Studies . In 1991 he was visiting professor at the Business School of the University of North London . He was director of the Dixons Bradford City Technology College of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research from 1995 to 2003.

Kalms was a member of the Trustee of Industry in Education Ltd from 1993 to 2002 and of The Economic Education Trust from 1993 to 2002. From 1998 to 2001 he was director of Business for Sterling . In the Conservative Party , he was from 2001 to 2003 Treasurer ( Treasurer ).

He is also involved in a variety of private charitable activities, including establishing the Stanley Kalms Foundation in London and the Stanley Kalms Readership in Business Ethics and Strategic Management at the University of North London. He is also associated with the King's Hospital ISLET Diabetes Research Program .

Kalms has close ties with the University of Buckingham . He received an honorary degree there in 2002 and Chris Woodhead holds the Sir Stanley Kalms Professorship of Education .

Kalms wrote in the press about the European Monetary Union , as well as corporate governance and a book - A Time to Change - an overview of the activities of the United Synagogue , which appeared in 1992.

He is currently Chairman of Volvere plc .

Membership in the House of Lords

Kalms was appointed Life Peer as Baron Kalms, of Edgware in the London Borough of Barnet on June 1, 2004 . He gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on July 16, 2004 on the Christmas Day (Trading) Bill .

In the same year he spoke up twice on the draft law for the European Constitution . The following year he spoke on the Low Tax Economy and the Prevention of Terrorism Bill . In 2009 he spoke again and spoke on the situation in the Gaza Strip and the Companies' Remuneration Reports Bill . He spoke there again in October 2012, for the second reading of the Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equality) Bill .

He gives Islamism and the preservation of the British pound as his political interests .

He mentions Israel and the states of Europe as states of particular interest .

Kalms was Treasurer of the Conservative Party from 2001 to 2003 . Like many in his party, he is against the euro . He is a member of the Conservative Friends of Israel .

In June 2009 he was about to be expelled from the party for his support for the UK Independence Party (UKIP). He currently sits in the House of Lords as an Independent ( Non-Affiliated ).

Kalms attacked William Hague because of his position regarding the Israeli attack on Lebanon . He called him an "ignorant armchair critic" and said that his comments were "downright dangerous".

Honors and memberships

Kalms received an Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt) degree from the University of London's Council for National Academic Awards in 1991 . The University of Sheffield honored him with this in 2002 . In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of North London.

Richmond recognized him as the Hon DEcon . In 1995 he became an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School . previously he was made a Fellow of the City and Guilds of London Institute in 1988 .

Kalms is a member of the Carlton Club . From 1991 to 2001 he was director of the think tank Center for Policy Studies (CPS).

In 1996, he received a Knight Bachelor's degree as part of the 1996 New Years Honors for his services in the electronics trade.
