Located on the Czarna Staszowska , Staszów is the municipal seat and district town in Poland in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship about 53 km south-east of Kielce . In 2006 the municipality had 26,492 inhabitants, its main town 15,499 inhabitants and the rural municipality 10,993 inhabitants. Three railway lines intersect in Staszów, including the broad gauge line Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa .
history
The place is first mentioned in 1241. The brick church, consecrated to Saint Bartholomew, was completed in 1345. In 1525, Staszów was given the privilege of holding a fair three times a year. The Polish Brothers appeared around 1580 . In 1718 the synagogue was built. In 1731 the place came under the rule of the Czartoryski .
In 1795 Staszów fell to Austria with the Third Partition of Poland . In 1809 the city came to the Duchy of Warsaw . In 1815 the place fell to the Kingdom of Poland . After the end of the First World War , the place came back to the newly formed Poland. The Jewish community, which made up 55% of the population in 1930, fell victim to the Holocaust ; Sefer Staszów describes the murder of a large number of Jewish residents on November 8, 1942, known as "Black Sunday". In 1944, 80% of the place was destroyed by bombing. In 1954 Staszów was again a district town.
