The parish church of Sainte-Foy (Saint Fides Church) is a former monastery church in Sélestat ( Schlettstadt ), a municipality in the French department of Bas-Rhin in Alsace . The three-tower Romanesque church is the only remnant of an earlier priory subordinated to the Benedictine mother abbey of Sainte-Foy in Conques and represents an important stage on the Romanesque Road .

history

From the previous building from the 11th century, founded by Countess Hildegard von Egisheim , only a square crypt, uncovered in 1892, remains.

The currently visible church building was built from 1170 to 1180 with funds donated by Friedrich Barbarossa and is characterized by its stylistic uniformity and balanced proportions.

The church initially served as a Benedictine priory church. It later became part of a Jesuit college for a while and, under the influence of this movement, was largely stylistically transformed. At the end of the 19th century, the architect Charles Winkler restored the building to its original state.

Furnishing

The side portals, the windows to the vestibule and the main portal in the vestibule show rich, partly painted figural decorations. A frieze of vegetal motifs runs around the apse .

Inside, the ornate column capitals and the mighty late baroque pulpit are remarkable .

organ

The organ , also from 1892, was made by Rinkenbach . The instrument has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The actions are pneumatic.
