Ste-Onenne is the Roman Catholic parish church of Tréhorenteuc ( Morbihan department ) in Brittany . The church is also known as the Church of the Holy Graal (French: L'église du Saint Graal ) because of its interior decoration and its location in the fabulous Brocéliande forest , in which parts of the Arthurian legend are located .

history

The church, consecrated to the local Breton saint Onenne, goes back to a medieval sacred building, which initially served a small priory of the Paimpont Abbey and later became a parish church. The oldest surviving parts of the church are believed to date from the 16th and 17th centuries. In the course of the French Revolution, parish properties were confiscated and the rectory was converted into a school building. The church bells were confiscated to be melted down for the manufacture of weapons.

From 1809, worship in Tréhorenteuc was banned and the parish was merged with Néant-sur-Yvel . After 1820, church services were permitted again, but the church building was meanwhile in a ruinous condition, but was subsequently restored. In 1930, a clergyman described entering the church as life-threatening. Between 1942 and 1962, the building was finally reconstructed at the instigation of Abbé Gillard, who also arranged for the interior to be furnished with references to the Arthurian legend. Today a monument in front of the church is dedicated to Gillard.

The large, semicircular choir window in the east after the renovation shows a scene around the Holy Grail , the round window in the southern side chapel depicts Saint Eutropius , who is said to have come to France as a companion of Saint Mary Magdalene and thus also links to the legend of the Grail Has.

Further information

The church is the setting for the novel Breton Secrets - Commissioner Dupin's Seventh Case by Jean-Luc Bannalec . In the filming of the novel in 2019 for the episode Breton Secrets of the crime film series Commissioner Dupin , Ste-Onenne was not used as the filming location, but the Ste-Véronique chapel in Bannalec, further west in Finistère .
